UWA Rural Medicine and Dentistry Seminar – 16 May 2013
NSHS STUDENTS TRY THEIR HAND AT MEDICINE
Plaster Casts and Suturing were all par for the course on Thursday when the UWA Rural Student Recruitment Team visited Narrogin Senior High School to run an Information Session and Workshop for Year 10, 11 and 12 students interested in a career in Medicine or Dentistry at UWA. 10 students were in attendance.
UWA Representative, Sue Pougnault explained the process for entry to Medicine at UWA via the Rural School Leaver Pathway. All applicants offered a place in the Rural School Leaver Pathway to study medicine and dentistry at UWA will have to complete one of five UWA Undergraduate bachelor degrees before completing the new ( 4 year) postgraduate qualifications Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD).
Yr 11 Student, Shannon Wallace said “The Medicine and Dentistry Seminar really helped me to get a better idea of the kind of career I’d like to pursue and the different pathways available to me as a rural student.”
Entry Requirements – Rural School Leaver Pathway
- Minimum Australian Tertiary Admission Ranking (ATAR) of 96 or equivalent
- Suitable UMAT
- Structured interview
- Manual dexterity and spatial awareness admission tests (DMD only)
- Rural eligibility requirement (your principal home address is an Australian Standard Geographical Remoteness Area (ASGC-RA) 2 -5 for a minimum of five years (consecutive or cumulative) from the commencement of primary school.

It is interesting to note that Narrogin Senior High School has had a long association with UWA through this program with many Ex Narrogin Senior High School students going on to become very successful Medical Practitioners. A recent graduate (with honours), Taya Carter said “I didn’t decide to study medicine until after I had finished high school. I was fortunate that the education I received at NSHS allowed me to choose the degree I wanted to do. I would encourage anyone who is considering medicine or dentistry from the country to give it a go. I studied at UWA which had a fantastic incentive program for country students, including information and advice about various scholarships available.”
